Lake County Mediation Lawyer

Mediation is a form of alternative dispute resolution. In Indiana, it often is used in divorce and other family law matters to give the parties an opportunity to resolve their differences in a civil manner before going to court. Dissolution mediation can be less expensive and less stressful than an adversarial divorce.

I’m Julie R. Glade, a registered family law and mediation attorney in Merrillville, Indiana. My experience as a licensed attorney and a mental health nurse has assisted me in helping parties work toward an amicable settlement of divorce issues such as child custody, child support and visitation, and property division.

In a traditional divorce, each party in the relationship is represented by his or her own lawyer. Since the process is adversarial by nature and depends on the circumstances, traditional divorce proceedings litigated in court may be drawn out — and expensive.

The Divorce Mediation Process

In dissolution mediation, each individual hires an objective third party, a registered mediator, to help them reach an agreement. Both sides are free to submit a confidential statement outlining their respective positions to assist the neutral mediator; the mediator cannot share the confidential statement with the opposing party. In addition, Indiana law and rules provide safeguards to protect the confidential nature of settlement meetings. Parties are not required to reach a mediated agreement, but the results are binding on parties if an agreement is reached and presented to and approved by the court.

Divorce mediation can be used to address a single intractable issue in a divorce or it can be used to resolve the entire divorce. Each side can be represented by his or her own attorney or the parties can attend mediation alone without legal representation, if they so choose.

Dissolution mediation can result in a streamlined, inexpensive divorce that spares the parties the financial and emotional costs of litigation. Our firm values the benefits of mediation and offers this important service to our clients. Under new Lake County family law rules, all forms of negotiation, including dissolution mediation, are encouraged before parties proceed to litigation in court. If you would like to end your marriage through mediation, speak to one of the top family law attorneys, Julie Glade, about the matter. Mediation cases can be far less expensive than traditional divorce cases, plus, mediation also ensures there are no hard feelings after everything is said and done. As a result, you may find parenting with your ex-spouse is much easier and more collaborative.
